The Akita is an affectionate dog with their families but a bit leery of strangers. They are intelligent, devoted and easy going. They are laid back for the most part but make excellent guard dogs. This breed is very good with children, making them a good family pet.

Their undercoat is soft and dense, while the outer coat is rough & straight.

Coat Colors

The Akita colors are brindle, piebald, white, black & fawn.

Coat Care

Their coat is best when brushed on a daily basis. They shed heavily twice a year. Bathe only when necessary.

The Akita life expectancy is between 10 - 12 years. Some health concerns to look for in this breed are:
• Hip Dysplasia
• Elbow Dysplasia
• Eye Conditions such as Cataracts & PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy)

The Akita breed originated in Japan and was used as guard dogs and hunters. Dog fighting became very popular and so this breed was used for that intention. The Akita was then to be preserved back to the original breed, not bred to fight. Hellen Keller brought the first Akita over to the US in 1937.
The Akita was first registered by the AKC in 1972 and was grouped as Working.

I am so sorry for your loss.

I have had a few special dogs in my lifetime that were wonderful friends. When my last akita Bear died I would wake up in the wee hours and sob. I missed him so. He was just eight when he died of anal gland cancer. All I felt for the longest time was I just want him back.
That was when I found this room and received so much comfort. After a couple of months I started fostering dogs and that helped.
Now I have a new akita puppy named Coco that is a joy to my heart.
I still think of Bear everyday. And Angel, the akita I shared life with before Bear
